Sunflower Fun

Back in October 2011, Laura invited Penny to set the challenge for the week.

Penny wrote “In Republic of South Africa, on 12 October we have Bandana Day, which is run by the Sunflower Fund.  This is an organization founded in 1999 in support of the SA Bone Marrow Registry for people suffering from leukaemia. Every year our local retailer (Pick n Pay) sells Sunflower bandanas and the proceeds go towards the Sunflower Fund...everyone wears a bandana, somehow, somewhere on this day!”

So the challenge was set – to use the Sunflower Fund logo as inspiration for the tile.

I’m currently facing challenges with my laptop, so wasn’t able to use the actual logo. Instead I drew my own sunflower, split it into sections and tangled in each section.

I used a lot of tangles - Florz, Wud, Knightsbridge, Lotus Pods, Bunzo, Paradox, Striping, CO2, Gingham, Koryl, Zedbra, Shattuck, Socc, Sand Swirl, Hurly Burly, Paisal, Prestwood, Tripoli, Spinners and Tipple... Woo hoo!

So here it is:

Hope

In this challenge set in October 2011, Laura asked us to represent hope, in whatever form that took for us personally.
I chose to use the word as my string, and fill it with tangles beginning with the letters H, O, P & E.
I used Hibred and Hollibaugh, Orlique and Opus, Pea-nuckle, Pokeleaf and Paradox, and Echoism and Emingle!

Duo tangle - Jonqal and Opus

In September 2011 Laura set us the challenge of completing a tile using just Jonqal and Opus.

So here it is!

Pinwheels for Peace

Back in September 2011, Amy Broady suggested this challenge, to celebrate the International Day of Peace on September 21st

This is the second Pinwheel for Peace challenge that I've done, as earlier this year I drew the pinwheel you can find here.

This time I decided to make an actual pinwheel. I used just two tangles; Bloom on the front of the square and Coaster on the back. When I put the pinwheel together I used a little bit of IX right in the centre.

Zendala Dare 32

The last few weeks I've been able to do the dare on a Saturday or Sunday as I'd been tracing it from the screen of my laptop (impatient... Moi?).
But last week my laptop died, so I had to wait until Monday to get the template printed.
And then work and life got in the way. Finally got it done, (and I'm now working on a second version!) and tried a tangle I've not use before, Prestwood.
I also used Sand Swirl, Shattuck, Tipple and Socc.

Love is all you Need

Laura set this challenge in September 2011 to mark the Ten Year anniversary of the tragedy of 9/11 in New York City.
As Laura wrote "Through love we have the ability to change the world."
I love grid-based patterns so that's what I chose to use.
I used the word 'Love' as my string.
I loved this challenge and the end result, even though my attempt at Bucky went wrong! I joined the wrong pair of dots... So I'm calling it the 'Bucky Oops' variation :D
The tangles I used were Chard, Bloom, Nzeppel, Ninja Stars, Beelight, Postl, Up & Across, and finally, Bucky Oops!

Better than a Pair of Ducks

Back in September 2011, Laura challenged us to draw a monotangle using only the official tangle, Paradox.
She gave us a handy link to Margaret Bremner's Paradox tutorial, which I went through before I got stuck in. The tips are really useful.
The string pictured below went through some minor changes as I tangled, when I realised that some sections needed to be broken up further.
I made a couple of 'mistakes'... But was pretty pleased with the result.
Might have to try a few more monotangles.

Zinger!

So Laura's challenge this week is to use the new-old tangle "Zinger".

It's a tangle that Maria has been using for years, that finally got it's official launch in the Zentangle newsletter that went out this weekend.

I enjoyed trying out Zinger. And there were a few other tangles that I've taken the opportunity to try, as I've seen other tanglers using them in their tiles.

In the end, besides Zinger, I used Bales, Koryl, Sand Swirl, Tripoli and Crescent Moon.

Kiss My Grids

This was another challenge set back in August 2011. This time Laura asked us to draw a grid over the string. I love grid patterns, so had lots of fun doing this one.
I used Beelight for the background, then Nzeppel, Socc and my own Khirkee in the middle of the tile.

FMS Photo-A-Day Challenge - November Week 2

The prompts from Fat Mum Slim this week were:

Day 12: Drink
Day 13: Where you slept
Day 14: Man-made
Day 15: In your bag
Day 16: The view from your window
Day 17: The last thing you bought
Day 18: Happened this weekend

Ooooo, I do enjoy being challenged in this way, and I love the photos that other people take of these prompts.

Here's the round up of this week:
Drink - Saunf Sharbat with yummy thali; Strawberry & Mango fruit tea.
Where I slept - until Coco woke me up.
Man-made - the Diwali aftermath.
In my bag - loads of stuff!
The view from my window - buildings and sunlight streaming in.
The last thing I bought - Sakura Micron pens and a few of the things I've drawn using them
Happened this weekend - Shiv Sena supremo, Bal Thackeray, passed away and the whole of Mumbai shut down. No rickshaws, no taxis, no shopping malls, no food shops... Everything shut. Oh, and Coco & I went for our usual walk.

Tile on Tile

Back in August 2011, Laura invited Margaret Bremner, the Enthusiastic Artist, to set this challenge.

The idea is to leave a generous border when plotting your four corner points, so as to create a tile within a tile.

Here's my string:

And here's my tile:
Unshaded

Tile on Tile
Tangles: Cadent; Shattuck; Warble
Bales; Purk; Florz; Fescu

Up Close

I had to break out my 005 Micron to help get the needed detail on the little tile.

Broken Laptop = Mobile Blogging

So I'm trying this out to see how it all works!

And adding a link to my newest post which was scheduled from my laptop before it kicked the bucket - Tile on Tile

Hmmm, pics not looking so good... Is it Instagram that's the issue? Let's try another pic...

Happy blogging...

Assunta

My laptop is broken... So for now I'll be blogging from my mobile - apologies if it looks strange at all.

This Assunta challenge was set by Laura back in August 2011 when the official tangle, Assunta, was newly launched!

I have always struggled getting the Assunta evenly spaced, until I started with a dotted grid before I drew the little lines in... It really helped with my spacing.

In the end I enjoyed this challenge immensely, especially playing with the colour.

Hope you enjoy the pics.

Pendrills

Laura set this challenge back in August 2011, to celebrate the release of the new Official Tangle, Pendrills.

This tangle was inspired by the straight & twisty tendrils of a grapevine. It's not a tangle that I'm comfortable with...yet.

I started with TanglePattern's String 024, which was drawn by Jadie Wright.

But the final result bears little relation to the string:
Pendrills

Still a few pages left in my tiny tangle journal... better get on with a few more!

Minnie - New Tangle!

So I was heavily inspired by the Diva Challenge this week - Mickey. We were asked to represent Mickey Mouse and Walt Disney in our tile. I watched Steamboat Willie and scoured the internet for pictures of Mickey and his pals, and one thing jumped out at me - Minnie's bow!
If you want to find out more and see Minnie in action, then hop on over to my post "Hey Mickey, You're So Fine..."

And with no further ado, here she is... Minnie:
Minnie
and a bit of Socc thrown in for luck!

I'm definitely one for grid-based patterns, but gave a little bit of free form Minnie a try too.

Hope you enjoy it.

Opposites Attract

Laura invited Guest Challenger, Christina Vandervlist, to set this challenge back in August 2011.

The challenge was to use either all straight lines or all curvy lines for the string, and then fill the string with it's opposite!

I felt the need to do both of these...

Here's the straight string:
Unshaded

Opposites Attract - Straight String
Curvy Tangles: Warped Eggs; Nipa; Dansk;
Scallops; Unyun; Assunta

And the curvy one:
Opposites Attract - Curvy String
Straight Tangles: Ixorus (variation); Static;
Knightsbridge; Baton

 And finally a few close-ups:

Hey Mickey, You're So Fine...

It feels like there's been no time between the last challenge and this one... but that's because I was very late getting going on Socc! But I'm on holiday this week!! And this week's challenge was SOOOOOOOOOO much fun!!!

Welcome to the Mickey Challenge, set by guest challenger, Courtney Frantz.

In this challenge Courtney challenges us to do a Mickey Mouse inspired tile, as November 18th is Mickey's birthday - the day Steamboat Willie was released.

So I started with overlapping Ms to form my string:
MM String

And then I watched Steamboat Willie which is posted on the challenge and was inspired! I even came up with a new tangle (at least I think it's new... please tell me if you know otherwise) based on the big bow Minnie often wears.
Mickey

Mickey Vermal; Pluto bones IX; Mickey tangle;
Minnie's Polka dots, Flowers and Bows
Steamboat Willie's bell and puffs of smoke

Colourful Mickey!

As I said.... SOOOOOOOO much fun.

Update - 13th October
Here are the instructions for Minnie's Bows: Minnie - New Tangle
